MISSION

The mission of ADPList is to provide free mentorship to everyone, even if they are new to the industry, don't have much networks or resources.

Since this is a free platform, all the mentors are using their free time to volunteer and help mentees who are in needs. In this project, we focus on improving the mentors’ experience on the platform.

THE CHALLENGE

Build a Means, Not an End.

We aim to facilitate meaningful relationship between mentors and mentees in our ecosystem to maximize engagement and increase the quality of booked sessions.

MY ROLE

I led through user research to prototype to build a new community feature that serves as a vessel of meaningful conversations by introducing mentors’ thoughts and personality.

I worked with my teammate Hakyung Yeom, the product design lead, tech lead and the product manager.

KICKOFF

Understand the Landscape

I kicked off my research by conducting comprehensive competitive analysis, drawing out the relationships between stakeholders by financial values, functional values and identity values.

RESEARCH - Survey

Who is our primary audience?

The stakeholder map not only helped me understand the holistic landscape of the related industry and competitors, but also hinted my survey questions in order to understand what identity values have motivated the ADPList mentors to be on the platform.

Assumption mapping.png

Through the Survey, I tried to:

  • Identify the mentor archetype.

  • Understand their motivation, frustrations, and needs.

  • Identify their expectation gap with current experience.

KEY INSIGHTS

While looking at the current experience and interactions on ADPList, I interviewed 23 community contributors on the platform and found out their pain points.

Low discoverability

Mentors can only be discovered by their labels, no thematic entry point to find specific mentors.

😰“Even if I want to help them, they don’t have a way to find me.”

Expectation gap

Mentors don’t have a way to highlight what they care about, how they identify themselves.

😡 “Why do even the platform asks me these. I have never gotten call over social impact itself.”

Repetitive questions

Same questions are answered again and again, mentors feel not rewarding and burnout.

😣“It's not as rewarding for me. It is time consuming and it takes a lot of effort.”

REFRAME THE PROBLEM

My research created a shared vision with stakeholders and revealed issues and key touch points early in the product process, that is to:

Create a better entry point for mentors and mentee to discover, match, and inform.

STRATEGY

Based on the key insights we are addressing in the design, I established the experience pillar as our north star so that everyone is aligned with the goal and approaches.
